Newsletter 3-24-17

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Happy Spring!  We talked about how March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb!  Well the lion is holding on till the last week!  Please remember to send your child to school dressed for cold and wet recess time.  It is recommended to send snow pants, coat, hat, gloves and boots  because our playground is full of snow and the temperatures have been extremely cold lately.  I hope it changes soon!

In the Classroom

Writer’s Workshop – 2R is starting a class book on CARES.  It will be a published hard copy book and I sent home a form if you want to order one!  We are learning the IIM research method and our class focus is on bats.  IIM stands for Independent Investigation Method.  After the kids learn the steps for IIM, they will choose an animal to study.  After their research is done, they will write a realistic fiction story and create their own published book using an art and literacy approach called Picturing Writing.  These should be ready for our Student Showcase on May 18th!
We are starting our Poetry unit with our fourth grade reading buddies! Some types of poetry we will be learning about are Haiku, Diamante, and Limerick.

Math   Unit 7 begins next week.  In this unit, we will revisit combinations of 10.  We will also discuss strategies for solving addition and subtraction problems that have more than two addends.  They use units of yards and meters to measure distances.  At the end of the unit they will collect data and display it using a frequency table and a line plot.  Please continue to work with your child on the packet of addition and subtraction facts that were sent home.

Science and Social Studies2R will be learning about community helpers with their Power Half Hour classmates!  We will be learning about the earth with the focus on weathering and erosion.  Hopefully as the weather gets nicer we can get outside to observe and write in our science notebooks!
The Leprechaun traps were great!  Those projects give kids a chance to design, build and explain their thinking!
