Newsletter 1-13-17

January 13, 2017

Dear Parents and Guardians,

On Tuesday, January 17 we begin the third quarter of school.  Instead of PE on Monday, the special class will be Art.  The other change is that Health class will begin for 2R on Thursday instead of library.  We will still have library visits to check out books every other week.
During the winter months, please make sure your child comes to school dressed for the snow.  Snow pants, snow boots, mittens or gloves and a hat are required for them to play in the snow.
Since we have PE two times per week (Tuesday and Friday), please make sure they also pack sneakers or you could leave an extra pair at school.

In the Classroom

In Writer’s Workshop, the kids are learning how to share their opinion to prepare for persuasive writing.  We read a book, Stella Writes an Opinion and the kids saw how powerful a persuasive piece of writing can be.  In the book, Stella shares her opinion in a letter that is read by the principal.   In the end, the principal agrees with her and makes a change at school.

Word work continues with the second grade accountable words and spelling patterns.  Vowel teams are very challenging to remember to spell correctly.  We are currently working on the OA vowel team pattern.

In Math, we have begun Unit 5.  This unit will focus on helping kids count up or count back to make change.  An open number line teaches kids how to add and subtract numbers.  More practice on knowing how to read and write the time on a clock is another focus.
Please continue to work with your child on the packet of addition and subtraction facts that were sent home.  Let me know if you need another copy.  This skill is an important one for your child to develop automaticity in so that they can quickly and accurately recite the facts.
This is a foundational skill to prepare for multiplication in third grade.
