October 13, 2017 Dear Parents and Guardians, In the Classroom In Writer’s Workshop, the students are learning how to add adjectives to their writing which makes their writing more interesting and helps add detail. The focus in word work has been on the short sound of the vowels. Please help your child study for the upcoming second grade word test on Friday, 10/20. In Reader’s Workshop, the focus in guided reading groups has been on Informational Text (non-fiction) and learning about the text features. During the read aloud, I have been reading a chapter book called Best Enemies and the kids are learning about character traits. They are also focusing on the story elements in fiction: character, setting, problem and solution. Math – Starting next week on Wednesday, I will be sending home a math game to play instead of the math home-link. So far the kids have learned how to play penny plate, fishing for 10, Top It and the Exchange game. Science - Pumpkin Day – Monday, October 30 Please send in a small pumpkin (pie size) for your child to do scientific observations and experiments with!
