Newsletter 5-19-17

Dear Parents and Guardians, Well it is certainly starting to feel like summer with the warm temperatures! Last night in the auditorium the second graders sang beautifully at their concert despite the very warm temperature! They did a great job preparing for the concert and they deserve a round of applause! I know you enjoyed seeing their IIM animal projects and their writing portfolio! Thanks for coming to our showcase and performance last night! We still have so much to do in writing. We will begin making a realistic fiction book starting next week. It will be written and illustrated by your child. We just finished reading the biography of Helen Keller and will watch the movie version to compare and contrast the two stories about her life. We had a special guest (Thomas Caswell’s grandfather) come into our class to teach us sign language. We learned the American Sign Language alphabet and some signs like Good Morning. Our NG2 Power Half Hour groups have finished their projects on community helpers. Some groups made posters and sculptures. Some groups made videos. There will be a Community Helper Fair next Tuesday so that the kids can show what they learned to the other classes in Kindergarten, First Grade and Second Grade. The most important part of this project was learning to work together using 21st century skills like collaboration, cooperation and creativity. Just a reminder that we have an amazing field trip to the New England Aquarium and IMAX Theatre in Boston on May 31st. I am sure the kids are looking forward to it! I know I am!
