Newsletter - 9/30/16

September 30, 2016

Dear Parents and Guardians,

It was great to meet so many of you at the Parent Information Night.  I sent home the power point presentation so you would have a copy to keep.  Please continue to send in afternoon snacks for your kids!  They need the energy at the end of the day!

Conferences
The parent/teacher conferences begin next week.  They are on Thursday, Oct. 6 and Tuesday, Oct. 11.  Thank you for choosing your conference at the Parent Information Night.  I look forward to sitting down with you to go over your Hopes and Dreams for your child this year.

In the Classroom

In Writer’s Workshop, the students are learning how to write a SUPER size sentence by adding adjectives and more detail.  The kids are also writing small moments or narratives in their journal each day. The focus in word work has been on the second grade accountable words and contractions.

In Reader’s Workshop, the class has been practicing how to move through the Daily 5 centers.  While I am working with a guided reading group, the kids either read independently, listen to reading using RAZ Kids on IPADS, work on word work or work on writing.  On Monday we will have our first Book Buddy reading time with Mr. Wolfson’s fourth grade class.

Math -.  Math centers are up and running.  The groups of students rotate through four centers that focus on math facts, practice in their math journal, using technology (Dreambox or Math Racing) or playing a game.  The games so far are penny plate and Fishing for 10.  The first test on Unit 1 concepts will be done in a few days.

Science – We are learning about solids, liquids and gases in the study of matter.  On Friday, the second graders watched an experiment that involved some changes in matter.  Ask your child about that exploding experiment!

As always, please feel free to contact me if there is anything I can do to attend to your child’s educational needs.  My contact information is below.
